Comparison of Sesbania rostrata and Phaseolus calcaratus as biofertilizer for corn

Two field experiments were conducted to assess and compare the effectiveness of two legume green manures as biofertilizers for corn with or without fertilizer N. Results from the experimental station revealed that biofertilization with either Sesbania rostrata or Phaseolus calcaratus (rice bean) improved significantly the grain, stover, cob, and total dry matter yields of corn over those of the control. P. calcaratus was equally effective as S. rostrata in improving corn yields. In the presence of fertilizer N, substantial yield increments were obtained upon using the biofertilizers. In a farmers' field, P. calcaratus had a significantly higher biomass production than S. rostrata although the N accumulation was the same in both species. The yield and N uptake of corn grains were improved significantly over those of the control by biofertilization with P. calcaratus but not with S. rostrata. Apparently, P. calcaratus performs better than S. rostrata under rainfed conditions.
