Loss assessment of stored rice infested with stored-product insect

The losses of stored rough and brown rice which were infested with Rhyzopertha dominica, Sitophilus oryzae, Tribolium castaneum, Ephestia cautella, and Sitotroga cerealella were assessed under experimental storage conditions of 30 deg C and 65% r.h. or 28 degrees and 70% r.h. Rough and brown rice of Nankin 11 (Indica type) and Shinpo 38 (Japonica type) were artificially infested with larvae or adults of each species and several variables for loss assessment were measured at certain intervals. The rough rice of Nankin 11 had a strong resistance to any insect species examined and no substantial loss was detected in all variables except in insect number during 14 weeks storage, whereas that of Shinpo 38 was infested severely with S. cerealella. In brown rice, however the deterioration of brown rice proceeded rapidly in all insect treatments. Although the variables measured were correlated with each other fatacidity value was not demonstrated to be a sensitive criterion of deterioration of rice caused by insect infestation.
