Evaluation of the effectivity of the centre-complex method of biological forest protection
1989
Burzynski, J. (Instytut Badawczy Lesnictwa, Warszawa (Poland). Zaklad Ochrony Lasu)
The method insists in increasing stand biological resistance to foliophagous insects by intensifying and introducing natural components of forest biocenosis, such as understorey vegetation, shrub and tree species, insectivorous, birds, bats, colonies of Formica polyctena, other useful birds, predacious and parasitic arthropods, amphibians and small mammals. Some experiments conducted on permanent study areas and casual observations proved that the method is a preventive treatment inhibiting the number of foliophagous insects appearing in small gradation centres. In case of mass appearence of insects on vast areas the method insists in reducing population density which results in reducing pest control treatments or even stopping it. The correct location of the area and carefull introduction of its individual components is a condition of effectiveness of this method
