Ten crops traditionally grown with yam in southern Nigeria were tested for resistance to Meloidogyne incognita race 2, in 1979-80. Results, based on gall indices and recovery of larvae from soil and roots, showed that Corchorus olitorus, Sphenostylis stencarpa, Hibiscus esculentus, and Cucurbita pepo were highly susceptible; Amaranthus sp., Citrullis sp., Zea mays, and Manihot esculenta, moderately susceptible; Telfairia occidentalis, resistant; and Mucuna pruriens, highly resistant. Planted on yam mounds, these crops could play an important role in altering the populations of root-knot nematodes.
