This paper looks at the problem of increasing agricultural production through research dealing with the African farmer's cropping systems and is aimed at involving the farmer in the research work. Two valuable sources of information exist for learning how to improve the farmer's cropping system: the farmer's present farming systems and experimental station results on crop technology. Results from the cropping system experiments provide researchers with valuable information from the farmer that will enable them to modify the cropping system to meet the needs of the farmer, increase the efficiency of existing physical resources vital to crop production, and to increase the productivity of the farmer and the farmer's labour and land.
