This paper discusses the breeding program conducted in Malaysia to develop sweet corn varieties containing the brittle-1 or brittle-2 genes (sources of sweetness) and adapted to humid tropical conditions. Analysis of the agronomic traits of unadapted hybrid cultivars and early generation selections of sweet corn crosses is presented. The author concludes that with further cycles of selection for increased plant and cob heights and large cobs, well adapted open pollinated cultivars carrying the sweetness genes could be obtained
