Water quality and waste load generation in the Sungai Hampar river basin receiving waste from 62 pig farms with a standing pig population of 67,180, domestic source and small scale industries were monitored for a period of 3 months. The inflow and outflow water quality characteristics of Total solids (TTS), Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD and Chemical oxygen demand (COD) were 85.0, 47.8, 16.2, 6.5, 21.8 and 510, 316, 277, 71, 353 mg/l respectively. Diurnal flow variations over the 8 hours monitoring period varied from 6,000 to 14,300 cu.m at inflow and 7,000 to 42,000 cu.m at the outflow of the pig farming area. Standard plate counts at the inflow and outflow of the basin increased from 10** (3) to 10** (7) CFU/ml. The major coliforms isolated were E.coli and Klebsiella spp.
