Variability of poplar clones in respect to their capability of rooting by cuttings

Root system formation on cuttings has been studied in 47 poplar clones. Cuttings, which were in the soil 30, 50 and 70 days after planting varied significantly according to the number and length of the rootlets, as well as their distribution. A great part of the variablities found is due to the differences between clones, which means that the properties are determined mostly genetically. There is a marked positive correlation between the number and length of the rootlets. All 3 species (Populus nigra, P. x euramericana and P. deltoides) have clones whose cuttings, relatively quickly after planting, form a root system, but they also have clones whose cuttings even after 70 days after planting form a very poor root system.
