[Hail damages on the vegetative and reproductive organs of the apple]

A study of damages caused by artificial hail has been done on a dense apple plantation, situated 10 kilometers from Titov Veles in Macedonia (Yugoslavia). This plantation was in its third, fourth and fifth year of vegetation. The greatest damage of the leaves was registered during the May treatment, when the leaves are most sensitive; the damaged leaves had strong respiration, used up a great deal of assimilates, while photosynthesis was reduced. The greatest number of blows and the greatest harm was registered on two-year-old branches. Hail effects the conducting function of branches; open wounds are suitable for pathogen penetration, various necroses develop. Fruits that are treated the latest have the highest transpiration. Organoleptic properties of the fruit become worse.
