Using scanning electron microscopy to assess smut spore germination on the bud surface of ten different sugar cane cultivars, a good correlation was found between inhibition of spore germination on the bud surface and host resistance to smut. This may reflect diffusion to the bud surface of antifungal compounds from within the bud though only partly so since extracts of bud tissue failed to inhibit smut spore germination in a manner commensurate with the field resistance rating of the host. Nevertheless, inhibitory compounds were present in the buds of ratoon canes of most cultivars and appeared to decline with maturation of the cane.
