Problems in conducting field experiments with sugar cane

The sugar cane crop cycle and biological properties of Saccharum species limit the range of experiments that can be effectively conducted with this crop. As a consequence of annual changes in climate, differences in cultural practice and biotic influences, no true comparisons can be made between plant crops and ratoons. Due to bud germination properties, which vary between clones and over time, experiments need to be planted over a restricted time period. Plant size and hence spacing density lead to difficulties in obtaining true replicates. The monitoring of growth responses, and their duration, requires the collection of large masses of data and thus necessitates a number of reliable data collectors. Each of these problems is discussed in relation to recent experiments conducted by U.W.I. and B.S.C.V.T.S. in Barbados.
