A study of 7 blue green algae (BGA) as to their nutritive value was carried out. Moisture content of the algae was found to range between 88 and 92% and ash content between 21 and 15% of dry weight. Crude fibre content was comparatively low, ranging from 2 to 4% of dry weight. The amount of protein ranged from 27 to 59% and that of carbohydrate from 15 to 45% of dry weight. There was a narrow range of variation in the fat content. The calorific value was found to range from 23 Kcal/100 g to 37 kcal/100 g. From the close similarity of the calorie value and protein content of these algae with those of some common green vegetables it may be suggested that these algae bear the potential for use as a dietary protein supplement, if there is no toxicity associated with such use.
