Changes in the esterase activity were investigated in the extract of total homogenate and intercellular spaces in Petunia hybrida, after inoculation with Arabis mosaic virus and after mechanical damage. In all cases there was a significant difference in the esterase activity in comparison with the healthy control. No significant differences were observed in any of these cases in the time patterns of the esterase activity of virus-infected plants if compared with mechanically damaged plants; this indicates nonspecific reactions. Coefficient Z was defined; it describes the ratio of esterase activity and total protein content in the extract. The parameter Z had a specific pattern in relation to the type of stress factor. The electrophoretic examination revealed an increase in band 3 absorbance of the total homogenate of virus-infected plants; no increase was observed in the mechanically damaged plants. The importance of esterase band no. 3 as an infection marker is weakened by a parallel occurrence of visual symptoms of virus infection.
