The problem of acidification of forest soils over the past three decades was studied in order to explain the changes in the soil medium of forest stands and to find a basis for solving the ecological problems of the Beskid Mountains. The effect of liming was also studied as exerted on the state of forest soils in 1983 to 1988. A significant acidification of the Beskid soils was recorded but no relationship was observed between soil acidity and the degree of damage to forest stands. The action of liming manifested itself in a reduction of soil acidity in the Ae and Ep horizons from 3.73 (in H2O), recorded before liming in 1983, to 3.88 and 3.86 in 1988. Also recorded during the same period was, in particular, an increase in MgO content from 4.7 (Ae) and 3.5 (Ep) mg per 100 g to 22.9 and 11.1 mg per 100 g, respectively.
