Stress disturbances in N, P and K accumulations in spring barley (Hordeum vulgare)

Disturbances in the accumulation of the N, P, K nutrients by the organs of spring barley, caused by water stress in organogenesis stages V, VII, IX and X, were quantified in a series of pot trials. Stress depressions in nutrient accumulation were recorded in the critical periods. The water deficit may cause disproportions in the uptake and accumulation of nutrients, which are dependent on the ontogenetic relationships (through their influence on the relationships between organs). The stems accumulate a larger proportion of nitrogen in the stages under study in the plants exposed to stress, as compared with undisturbed plants. Nitrogen concentration in the plant increases mainly as a result of the double stress in organogenesis stage VII and IX (the same applies to potassium), with the highest concentration in the leaves. In the stage of full ripeness, stress produced the greatest heterogeneity in nitrogen content in the grain. The degree of stress disturbance may depend on the intensity of the action of the limiting factor as well as on the adaptation power of the plants. The results of the trials confirm the justification of the attention that has to be paid to the simulation of an optimum water regime of plants.
