Determination of growth intensity for monitoring the health condition of forests in a one-year monitoring cycle based on the collection of increment probe data requests regular wounding of the same 5,500 trees. It is recommended to derive the growth data from the annual diameter increment of the average tree by measuring the girth of the stem permanently marked at the height of 1.3 m. The analysis of the precision of stem girth measurements confirms that in 95 per cent of measurements the limit 2 mm plus or minus is not exceeded. The results of the annual diameter increment of trees can be compared to the growth models which indicate the diameter change of the average spruce stem in dependence on age and site. By comparison of the actual value of the diameter increment to that of the tables the index of growth intensity is obtained. The largest decline in growth intensity of spruce (to 61 percent) was recorded in the regions of Kysuce and Orava (TMP - H1, L2, K1, K2, J2, J3, M2, I2) and in the southern part of the central Spis region (TMP - R2, P3, R4, S4, R5, P5, R6) which are polluted both from CSFR and foreign industrial pollution sources.
