The effect of different soil cultivations of winter wheat after grain maize as a forecrop on water content has been studied on medium heavy textured chernozem in the maize growing region at Hrusovany u Brna. Three technologies were tested in the stationary trial: common tillage to a depth of 0.22 m, minimum soil cultivation to a depth of 0.12 m and sowing into non-cultivated soil. Four-year investigations of decrease in the depth of soil cultivation led to improvements in moisture regime of the soil when significant increase in the average water content in comparison with tillage used occurred at the sowing into untreated soil even at the minimum soil cultivation. This increase was observed in the whole profile to a depth of 0.6 m. Water content in July with no difference of soil cultivation was close to the hydrolimit of wilting point and in the layer of 0.3 to 0.6 m the level of this point even decreased.
