14 inbred Zea mays L. lines were crossed with Zea mays ssp. mexicans. The F1 and F2 generations of the hybrid combinations surpassed the parents in plant height. In the F1 combinations, one phenotype producing a large number of side-shoots and many small ears, and another non-branching type bearing one large ear could be observed. Transitional types were also found. The F2 generations in all combinations and replications were uniformly branching and resembled Zea mays ssp. mexicana. The F2 generations of the hybrid combinations were resistant to Fusarium and corn borer. In the F2 generations both early and very late types occurred within the same treatment, with different proportions in each treatment. With respect to green mass, three F2 generations significantly surpassed the control. In some of the hybrids the macro- and microelement contents were greater than in the standard. The hybrids examined had higher aspargic acid and lysine contents than the control, and higher values for other amino acids were also observed in certain plant organs. It seems that Zea mays ssp. mexicans could be weel utilized in maize breedling.
