[Relationship of Fe, Mn, and Cu uptake by corn to its availability in soil, as measured by four extractants]

Corn (Zea mays L.) plants were grown in the greenhouse in 5 medium to coarse textured soils with three levels of Zn for each soil. Zn as ZnSO4 were added to each soil for studying the effect of Zn on the yield and deficiency symptoms. After 5 weeks the plants were harvested and micro nutrients (Zn-Fe-Cu-Mn) concentration present in the soil and amounts of nutrient uptake by plants were measured. Each soil was extracted by four different extractants. (1) 0.1 N HCl (2) 1% Na EDTA (3) 1N NH4 OAC (4) 0.005 M D.T.P.A. Micronutrient uptake by the plants was correlated with the level of micronutrient determined by each extractant. The highest correlation of Zn was obtained by extractant (4). Correlation coefficients for extractant 1, 2, 3, 4, were 0.24, 0.82, 0.76 and 0.86 respectively. The highest correlation for Fe was obtained by extractant (2). The correlation coefficients for 1, 2, 3, 4 were 0.21, 0.52, -0.12 and -0.6 respectively. The highest correlation for Cu was obtained by extractant (3). The correlation coefficients for 1, 2, 3, 4, were -0.44, 0.17, 0.23 and 0.31 respectively
