Effect of alar on four cultivars of pot chrysanthemum [Chrysanthemum morifolium]

The results showed that alar as foliar or soil applications significantly reduced inflorescence diameter, shortened length of the primary and the secondary shoots, increased chlorophyll content of leaves and reduced plant dry weight. However, diameter and number of the primary lateral shoots were not influenced. On the other hand, alar as foliar spray, in split or single application, was more effective in shortening the stem than soil drench application. At the same time, alar as foliar split application was more effective than the single ones. While alar soil drench applications did not influence the date of flowering however, foliar sprays delayed flowering from 2 to 4 days and increased shelf life of the flowers. The results also indicated varietal response to alar foliar sprays with respect to length of the shoot, inflorescence diameter and flower shelf life. In this respect, shortest stems, least inflorescence diameter and increased shelf life were observed in the cultivars WP, DDP and YP, respectively. The study experiment used four cultivars of Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat., namely: White Popsie (WP), Yellow Popsie (YP), Red Popsie (RP) and Dark Deep Popsie (DDP). The cultivars were grown in 15 cm plastic pots under glasshouse conditions in March, 1985 and again in March, 1986. The plants were treated with various concentrations of alar as soil drench or as foliar spray when average lateral shoot length was 5 cm long
