Monitoring spider mite populations on lemon for effective control with flubenzimine and omethoate

A field study was carried out from April 1986 to October 1987 to monitor adult populations of the spider mites Tetranychus cinnabarinus and Eutetranychus orientalis on lemon, in order to effectively control them with flubenzimine and omethoate. Adult mite populations started to build up in March and reached high levels during the spring. In summer, the populations were at a low level, but in autumn they increased again and attained medium infestation rates. Fluctuations in adult mite populations were governed by biological, behavioural, and ecological factors. Of these, mite density is seemingly the most prominent factor. Mite density, which was affected by temperature, influenced the efficacy of miticides used against them. Both flubenzimine and omethoate were effective against mite populations, and the crop yield was higher when they were applied at the economic treshhold or at a lower infestation rate
