Flowering of cyclamen as affected by gibberellic acid, benyladenine and promalin [peduncle length; number of flowers to open at full bloom]

Four cyclamen F1 hybrid cultivars Cyclamen persicum Mill. were treated separately when length of flower scapes was 1 to 2 cm with different concentrations of gibberellic acid (GA3), benzyladenine (BA) and promalin (GA4, GA7 + BA). The results indicated that GA3 at 5, 10, 25 and 50 ppm significantly enhanced early flowering, gave longer peduncles and increased number of flowers to open at full bloom over the nonsprayed plants. However, GA3 at 50 ppm tended to cause excessive elongation of the peduncles. For BA, the results showed that all the rates of BA were significantly ineffective in either causing early flowering or increasing length of peduncles. For Promalin, the results indicated that the rates 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0 ml/L significantly caused early flowering over the control. However, length of peduncle and number of flowers to open at full bloom were significantly increased at Promalin rates of 3.0, 2.0, 1.5, 1.0 and 3.0, 2.0, 1.5 ml/L, respectively. The described effects of GA3 and Promalin were proportional to the concentration. The late cultivar "Pastourelle" with the short peduncles was significantly responsive to Promalin in relation to elongation of flower scapes whereas "Polka" with the tall ones was the least. However, the cultivars "Ibis" and "Alouette" were intermediate in this respect.
