The results of the first of a series of two studies into flow regimes on the lower Waitaki River, New Zealand, are presented. They include a comparison of historical flow records and historical fisheries records; prediction of changes in water level with changes in flow, particularly in salmon spawning areas; assessment of water level dampening with distance downstream; assessment of fish stranding; assessment of redd dewatering and a review of information on the general effects of flow fluctuations on macrophytes, periphyton, macroinvertebrates, native fish, salmon, trout and fisheries
