Somaclonal variation for submergence tolerance in rice

Submergence tolerance was studied in R2 plant populations derived by self-pollination from R1 plants regenerated from seed callus cultures of rice varieties FR 13A and Calrose. One of the 15 FR 13 A lines and 2 of the 30 Calrose lines tested showed significant improvements in submergence tolerance. Other agronomic characters - seed weight, seed number, own length, seed color, plant height, and plant pigmentation - were studied in 144 R1 plants of Calrose and 72 R1 plants of FR 13 A. Much of the variation observed in those characters was of negative value compared with that of the parents, but some somaclones from each variety showed features that may be useful in plant improvement.
