Drought tolerance screening for deepwater rice

A rapid drought screening method, developed to evaluate an increased number of rainfed varieties and breeding lines for droughts reaction, has tested thousands of rices each year. Of the 50,686 entries screened from 1978 to 1987, 7,320 were deepwater rice (DWR) cultivars, F1s, F2s and segregating and advanced generation lines. Tested across years, six cultivars gave consistent drought tolerance and recovery scores, as did the drought-tolerant checks Salumpikit and IR442-2-58 and drought-susceptible checks IR20 and IR AT9. At least 1 parent from 28 of 33 multiple crosses that showed drought-tolerant progenies in 1987 was a DWR from Thailand. RD19 has become an important drought tolerance trait donor for DWR.
