Characterization of peanut stripe virus and its effect on growth and yield of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.)

Characterization of the Philippine isolate of peanut stripe virus (PStV) was done based on symptomatology, method of transmission, host range, physical and serological properties. The effects of this virus on the magnitude of losses in peanut yield and yield components as well as the sources of resistance were likewise determined. The disease appears as green islands or blotches, oakleaf pattern and stripes along the lateral veins of infected peanut leaves. The virus is readily transmitted to peanut and to some species of Papilionaceae and Chenopodiaceae by mechanical inoculation, grafting and by five aphid species with Aphis craccivora as the most efficient aphid vector. The virus remained infective in crude sap up to a dilution of 10 to the negative fourth power. It can be stored up to 3 days at 0 deg C and inactivated at 65 deg C. Inoculations at seedling and pre-flowering stages caused significant reduction in the number of pods per plant, yield, weight of seeds and percent germination. Three peanut accessions were identified with some degree of resistance to PStV from among 107 lines/accessions evaluated.
