Response of sunflower to plant population densities and row spacing in lowland after rice under zero tillage [Philippines]

Several research studies on sunflower production have been undertaken in the Philippines. However, little is known about the effects of row spacing and population density on the performance of this crop planted in the dry season after lowland rice. This study evaluates the performance of this oil crop under different row spacing and plant densities. It was found that row spacing of 50 and 75 cm does not affect the production of the crop. However, yield and other agronomic attributes respond significantly with population density. Seed, biomass and total dry matter yield respond positively with population density. Plant height and leaf area index exhibit the same performance. On the contrary, it has been found out that head diameter and seed weight decrease as population density increases. The generally good performance of this crop in terms of yield implies that sunflower is adapted to the Philippine dry season conditions and has potential to be an important component in post-rice farming systems in lowland area.
