Rainfed riceland maps and geographic database: an extrapolation and extension guide for cropping systems [Philippines]

A study was conducted to define the extrapolation domains for rainfed rice cropping system technology in the Northern Cagayan Valley [Philippines]. A set of maps at the barangay [village] level were produced that correspond to Rainfed Land Types, supported by a geographic database on microcomputer that contains all available data for each mapping unit. Mapping units were defined based on landform/hydrology/soil boundaries that characterize extrapolation zones. Systematic overlaying of site information (soil fertility, drainage class, analytical properties, rice varieties, etc) on 1:25,000 scale topographical maps resulted in several hundred unique mapping units, and allowed the assembly of the geographic database containing all the site characteristics data. Correlating landforms, soil and hydrology with crop adoptation from various research sites led to the recognition of six Rainfed Land Types arranged in a general order from a relatively favorable to an unfavorable agro-environment. A set of suggested cropping patterns were determined for each land type. The end product envisaged is a set of large-scale maps in booklet form with an accompanying printout of the data and the crop and cropping pattern recommendations for the convenient reference of agricultural extension technicians.
