The pest management requirements of the fruit and vegetable crops industry of the country is generally not appropriately and adequately met at present due to several constraints. For one, currently available control methods rely heavily is not solely on the use of expensive chemical pesticides which farmers can hardly afford to buy. Moreover, the bionomics of pest species and damage thresholds are not generally worked out yet. Crop protection research of fruit and vegetable crops should focus on developing practical pest management systems well-suited to the needs of the average farmer. Because insect pests and diseases are limiting factors, no amount of exhortation could induce farmers to plant a new crop or increase hectarage of his present crop without a reasonable assurance that pest problems would adequately be met. Ideally, the pest management package should use resistant varieties to the fullest extent possible, minimum use of reasonably safe pesticides, and utilization of existing natural and biological mortality factors.
