Varietal response of mungbean (Phaseolus aureus Linn.) to methods of Rhizobium inoculation grown after rice under Tarlac [Philippines] condition

A field experiment was conducted at the Tarlac College of Agriculture, Camiling, Tarlac [Philippines] to determine the response of four mungbean cultivars to two methods of inoculation grown immediately after rice harvesting during the dry season from January to March, 1986. Significant differences were noted in the percentage germination, number of flavors, length of pods and seed yield among mungbean cultivars. The methods of inoculation did not affect growth and yield of mungbean. Moreover, no significant differences were observed in the number of seeds, nodulation, dry matter weight, percentage pod set and nitrogen content among mungbean cultivars and the methods of inoculation. The effects of the methods of inoculation was not manifested, probably because of inefficient symbiosis resulting from heat stress and unfavorable soil conditions. Among the cultivars tested, Pagasa 1 produced the highest yield, followed by MGSO-10A, M-79 and Pagasa 3. Percentage pod set was significantly correlated with the number of nodules at flowering stage. Based on the results of the study, Pagasa 1 is a promising mungbean cultivar for Tarlac to be grown after rice with inoculants applied either in the soil or in the seed before planting.
