Reproductive performance of dairy cattle administered varying dosages of supplemental oxytocin at the time of artificial insemination

The effect of administering varying dosages of oxytocin at the time of semen deposition during artificial insemination on reproductive performance was studied using 60 dairy cows and heifers randomly assigned to four treatment groups. Data were analyzed statistically using a complete randomized design. After the treatment, means were compared using the Duncan's Multiple Range Test, female cattle in treatment 3 (60 I.U. oxytocin) showed the lowest number of services per conception (1.40). This was followed closely by treatment 2 (40 I.U. oxytocin), treatment 1 (20 I.U. oxytocin) and treatment 4 or control with 1.87, 2.80 and 2.73 services per conception, respectively. No significant difference in number of services per conception was obtained between treatments 3 and 2 but highly significant differences (P.01 were found between treatments 3 and 1, treatments 3 and 4, treatments 2 and 1, and treatments 2 and 4. Conception rates at first service for treatments 1, 2, 3 and 4 were 33.30%, 46.70%,60.00%, 33.30%, respectively.
