Characterization and isolation of the fungicidal component in the extract of Moringa oleifera Lam
1987
Layugan, M.B. | Zerrudo, J.
The chloroform extract of the leaves of Moringa oleifera Lam. was separated into seven crude fractions by preparative thin-layer chromatography and tested for fungicidal activity against five fungal pathogens namely: Alternaria brassicola, Colletotrichum sp., Curvularia sp., Diplodia natalensis, and Fusarium sp. Highly toxic properties were exhibited by Fraction B against all the pathogens, Fraction A and G against Colletotrichum sp. and Fraction D. against Fusarium sp. and Diplodia natalensis. The active fraction was rechromatographed in benzene and purified in order to isolate the active components. The purified fraction was again bioassayed on the test organisms. The results of bioassay were comparable with that obtained for the standard fungicide, Benlate. Characterization of the active components by infrared and ultraviolet spectrophotometry suggested the presence of ketone, which is responsible for fungicidal activities
