Adaptation of diverse cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) cultivars to excess moisture and drought in rice land

Results of the post-rice line source experiments indicated that the seed yields were substantially reduced by 10.5 to 71.1% in 1986-1987 and by 10.5 to 42.2% in 1988 in the fully saturated treatment as compared to dry treatment. Pods per plant, seeds per pod, and 1000 seed weight of the cultivars were reduced by 13.4 to 32.2%, 11.8 to 19.2%, and 2.8 to 12.2%, respectively. Total dry matter accumulation and partitioning, plant height, crop growth rate, and leaf area index were also reduced by 20 to 50%, 7 to 10%, 20 to 50%, 20 to 30%, respectively. Medium maturing cultivars performed better than the early maturing ones in all moisture regimes in both years. Results of the pre-rice experiment showed that the seed yields were substantially reduced by 3.7 to 80.4% in dry regime as compared to wet regime. In all experiments, medium maturing types were superior to early maturing and vegetable types in each water table depth. The adverse effect of shallow water table on plant and soil water relations, root and shoot growth, and yield and yield components was comparable to that of excess moisture effect as described in the studies on bundled lowland field.
