Field trial of bromadialone baits against rats (Rattus rattus mindanensis) in direct-seeded rice [Philippines]

Bromadiolone bait blocks (7 g, .005% ai) were tested in farmers' field in Hacienda Silay 2, Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo [Philippines] during the 1987 wet season direct-seeded rice crop. The objectives were to find out the biological efficacy of this rodenticide against ricefield rats, to compare its effects and economics with warfarin (.025% ai), and to formulate recommendations to farmers based on the test results. Rat-damaged tillers and, consequently, yield loss percentage were significantly lower in all treated plots than those in untreated. No significant difference in damage was observed in plots treated with bromadiolone at 50 blocks/ha every seven days and those treated with the same rodenticide at 100 blocks/ha every 15 days. Likewise, no significant damage difference was observed between bromadiolone-treated plots and those treated with warfarin. It is more economical to bait bromadiolone in direct-seeded rice at 100 blocks/ha. Baiting should be done initially at three days before sowing, at 30 days after sowing (DAS) and every 15 days thereafter up to 90 DAS.
