Substituting gibberellic acid with urea and boric acid in hybrid rice seed production

The growth regulator gibberellic acid (GA3) is used in hybrid rice seed production to increase panicle exsertion, stigma exsertion, and plant height to synchronize flowering between primary and secondary tillers. GA3 also increase plant height, which includes lodging. The extra exserted panicles can break during the wet season (WS) under torrential rains and strong winds. Urea, boric acid, and potassium nitrate (KNO3) were sprayed at different stages of crop growth in IR54752A and B during wet seasons of 1987 and 1988 and dry season of 1988. In all the three seasons, there is no significant difference on 100% flowering, on panicle number, percentage of fully filled grains, and on panicle exsertion. GA3 increased the height of the plants when it is sprayed at any stage of crop growth. Yield in CMS [cytoplasmic male sterile] line differed significantly between treatments and control plot in dry season but in wet seasons, even though there was difference in yield between the treatments and control plot, they were not significant. Urea at 2% or boric acid at 1.5% can replace GA3 (90 ppm) for increasing seed production in CMS line.
