Acyl lipid composition of thylakoid membranes of cadmium-treated tomato plants

Changes in the acyl lipid content and fatty acid composition in thylakoid membranes isolated from cadmium-treated tomato plants were investigated. Thylakoids from four-week-old tomato seedlings, grown during 14 days in nutrient solutions containing cadmium, showed a decrease in all individual glyco- and phospholipid content to approximately 75 percent of the control. The highest decrease occurred in phosphatidilcholine content. The fatty acid composition of acyl lipids extracted from thylakoids showed a significant decrease in trans-delta(3)-hexadecenoic acid present in phosphatidylglycerol and a tendency to the diminution in the content of linoleic acid in all lipids examined. The changes occurring in the lipid composition are discussed in terms of acyl lipid environment of phytosystem 2 and some phenomena related to its structure and function under cadmium treatment, as it was earlier observed
