The levels of endogenous abscisic acid (ABA) in buds, leaves and xylem sap of the willow trees (Salix viminalis) were at a maximum during summer in Aberystwyth, U.K. An additional peak in ABA content was observed in the xylem sap during the winter months. For three consecutive years, 1981, 1982 and 1983, ABA levels throughout the plant were not correlated with dormancy in buds. However, mechanical defoliation of the trees during dormancy induction from August to mid-September, promoted bud burst and a reduction in bud ABA content. By this time buds cultured in vitro had acquired the capacity to respond to exogenous ABA
