Effect of time of weeding on groundnut yield

A field experiment was carried out in Morogoro, Tanzania to determine the optimum weeding regime using three groundnut genotypes--MGC 81, MGC 96, and a locally available cultivar (MM)--in competition with natural weed population. Weeding done within the first 6 weeks, either once at 4 or 6 weeks or twice at 2 and 4 weeks after groundnut emergence, had no detrimental effect on groundnut seed yield. Weed infestation beyond the first 6 weeks reduced yields by about 46 per cent for MGC 81, 47 per cent for MGC 96, and 55 per cent for MM compared with weed-free plots. Regardless of the weeding regimes under consideration, MGC 81 gave consistently higher yields, compared with MGC 96 and MM, which was ascribed to its efficient pod filling and large seed.
