Ostrinia furnacalis Guenee, the Asiatic corn borer, is the major field insect pest of maize in the Philippines, and developing maize with host plant resistance to this pest has been selected by scientists at the Institute of Plant Breeding as the main strategy for managing its populations. Results obtained to date on borer biology, laboratory mass rearing, artificial infestation, resistance evaluation procedures, sources and mechanisms of resistance, and breeding methodology being utilized in developing resistant varieties are presented.
