Performance of bread wheat genotype grown in three environments in Ethiopia

Plant breeders are greatly concerned with the number of test sites necessary to select stable, adapted genotypes. Thus, grain yield stability of 167 genotypes plus two standard checks was studied in three environments differing in altitude, rainfall, soil type and disease incidence with the aim of determining the stability of genotypes selected initially at Holetta. Analysis of variance showed that the genotypes were significantly different in grain yield. Furthermore, genotype x location interaction was significant. Stability parameters were computed by regressing genotype yields on location mean yields (environmental index). The results showed that linear regression accounted for 20 to 100 % of the variation in yields of individual genotypes. Group I genotypes had regression coefficients ranging from 0.07 to 1.61; group II genotypes had regression coefficients ranging from 0.27 to 1.49 and group III genotypes had regression coefficients ranging from 0.40 to 1.40. In general, initial selection only at Holetta is not effective as illustrated by group I genotypes
