Food production and the nutrition status of the people of Uganda are discussed. Current levels and trends of production of food of animal origin are given. High protein crops such as rice, wheat, beans, soyabeans etc are noted to be in short supply thus leading to moderate malnutrition problems in the people. The need to correct imbalances in high protein supply in the diets of many Ugandans through corrective measures such as the exploitation of Ugandas vast protein resources of fisheries, wild game, forages and crop by-products is emphasized. Nutritionists, breeders and technologists are challenged to breed an animal that can effeciently utilize plant and animal protein resources.
