Comparative analysis of chemical composition of beechwood Fagus moesiaca: Juvenile and mature wood

Juvenile wood is found in all trees, its proportion in the harvested wood depending primarily on the rotation age. Differences in anatomical, physical and mechanical properties between juvenile and mature wood are accompanied by the differences in chemical composition. Two samples of beech wood Fagus moesiaca K. Maly, containing different fractions of juvenile wood were examined on contents of some chemical constituents. The major differences found were somewhat higher lignin and somewhat lower cellulose content in the juvenile wood sample as compared to mature beech wood sample, where both samples had similar pentosan concents. Differences found in regard to some other wood constituents are also discussed.
