The investigation was carried out into the effect of development in stage in wheat embryo and genotypes upon the frequency of callus formation, callus differentiation and plant regeneration. The investigation was carried out with 2 spring wheat varieties, Neretva i Jarak and 2 winter wheat varieties, Partizanka and Zitnica. It was established that mature embryos had greater ability for callus formation for all investigated genotypes, on the average. The percentage of callus formation varied from 95 to 100 % when mature embryos were used, i.e. from 85 to 92.5% with immature ebryos. As regards the number of regenerated plants, there were no significant differences between the immature and mature embryos for all varieties. Significant differences regarding frequency of callus formation, its differentiaion as well as plant regeneration were established among the investigated genotypes.
