Genetic and phenotypic variability of oil content in the maize kernel

Plants of three maize inbred lines and their F1 and F2 progeny were analyzed. It was established that oil content varied over a wide range, both among individual grains of one line and within different lines. General variability of oil content was under the influence of genes, environmental factors and interaction between genotypes and environmental factors. Positive correlations for oil content between parents and their progenies indicated the effect of genetic factors in the development of that property. It was established that maternal effect (i.e. effect of cytoplasma) had no significant effect on the oil content. Positive correlation was found between oil content of palmitic, stearic and oleic acid, whereas negative correlation was found between oil content and the content of linoleic acid.
