Ultrastructural changes od mouse mammary gland alveolar cells were studied in prepartum and one day lactating animals. In order to evaluate the integral hormonal impact on structure and activity of mammory cells, we compared the development of endomembranes and the synthesis of protein and lipid secretion products in 14, 16 and 18 days pregnant and one-day lactating animals. Endomembrane proliferation, vacuoles with secretory proteins and cell polarization appear on the 16th day, some alveolar cells acquire typical secretory structure: endomembrane systems and number of mitochondria are increased, lipid drops accumulate, big secretory vacuoles contain numerous casein granules and vacuole dilatation indicates that lactose is being accumulated. All alveoli reach this stage in the first day post partum.
