Detection of antibodies to Trichinella spiralis in farm pigs

Analysis of sera from farm-raised pigs suspected of Trichinella spiralis infection was performed by a double antibody indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results were evaluated by being compared with those obtained in the recently developed competitive inhibition assay (CIA) and the conventional indirect fluorescent assay (IFA). A high correlation between the tests was observed. All three tests detected 9.13% of the examined sera as positive and 83.97% as negative, while 6.9% of the total number of sera had different results in different tests. This discrepancy could be explained by a complex antigenic repertoire in the IFA test 73.45% positive results not confirmed with ELISA and CIA), a limited but still broad antigenic repertoire in ELISA (1.15% positive results obtained only by this test), and by the application of monoclonal antibody 7C C in CIA which recognizes only one antigenic epitope (2.3% negative results only in CIA).
