Dependence of the kidney elimination of penicillin G on the functional development of kidneys in cattle

The experiments were carried out in three age groups of calves (aged 4 to 177 days) to which penicillin G (sodium benzylpenicillin) was applied intravenously. The concentration of this antibiotic in the plasma, after certain time intervals, was determined microbiologically by the diffusion method. The test microbes used were Bacillus subtilis BGA and Bacillus stearothermophilus var. calidolactis c. 953. Pharmacokinetic analyses were performed according to the theory of statistical moments. It has been found that the kinetics of penicillin G in calves is two-compartmental and that the processes of distribution, biotransformation, and elimination of this antibiotic follow the first order kinetics. Also the rate of the kidney elimination of penicillin G was shown to increase with the calf's age, which suggests a gradual maturation of the calf's renal function, as well as the need for a proper regimen for the dosage of this antibiotic in younger and older animals.
