Effect of estrus synchronization, superovulation and ovulation induction on plasma progesterone in gilts near the time of the first cleavage of embryos

The objective of the present study was to determine whether the embryo-recovery rate and embryo-cleavage rate in superovulated gilts can be influenced by the plasma progesterone concentration. Following the standard superovulation treatment with PMSG, the embryos were recovered from 12 gilts by mid-ventral laparotomy between 57 and 59 hours after the HCG injection. The recovered embryos were evaluated under the stereomicroscope by examining their general morphological appearance and by determining their developmental stage. The progesterone concentrations were determined by the RIA-technique in plasma samples recovered from each gilt at the time of embryo-recovery. A total of 517 embryos were recovered, or 43.2 on the average. The percentage of the embryos cleaved out of those examined ranged from 0% to 62.5% per gilt. According to the linear regression analysis, the number of the ova recovered was not significantly correlated with the plasma progesterone concentrations. The percentage of the ova cleaved increased with the plasma progesterone increase and approached statistical significance. The results indicate a possible effect of progesterone on the ova development.
