In the conditions of water cultures, the effect of different levels of castorbean supply with nitrates on the initial and total nitrate reductase activity (NRA) was investigated. The increase of nitrate concentration in nutritive solution increased the activity more and decrased the ratio of initial and total NRA in leaves than in root. Direct dependence was observed between the NRA in leaves and uptake of nitrates and the regulative role of NRA was confirmed, especially the initial activity in shoot during the uptake of nitrates from exterior environment. On the basis of the content of total nitrogen and nitrates in xylem sap and NRA in roots and leaves the conclusion may be drawn that half of the total nitrate uptake in castorbean is reduced in root.
