Interpopulation and intrapopulation variability of some black alder (Alnus glutinosa L. Gaertn.) provenances in biomass and nutrient accumulation

On the basis of the obtained results the following can be concluded: 1. Genotypic differences in biomass production between the investigated provenances were found. French provenance exibited the greatest production, the Podravina provenance (the river Drava) and the poorest Posavina provenance (vie river Sava). 2. The obtained differences in biomass production between half - sibs progenies of the same provence point to the strongly emphasized interpopulation variability, i.e. different general cobining ability for biomass production, which gives good guarantes for improving of this characteristics by establishing improved clonal seed orchards. 3. The correlation between nodule dry matter and total quantity of plant dry matter is very strong (r = 0,80). 4. Regarding particular plant organs, the highest nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and calcium concentrations were established in leaves. Concentrations of iron and manganeze were extremely high in nodules. Together with root they contained relatively highest amount of zinc and very little of calcium. 5. Absolute highest quantities of all the analyzed nutrients were established in dry plant matter of the provenance. 6. The obtained differences between provenances of black alder point to genetic population variability of this species, which has to be taken special care of by using of reproductive material for plantation establishing. For this purpose we recommend the use of selected seedlings from local populations.
